Strayer University, formerly Strayer College of Baltimore, Maryland, is a private, for-profit educational institution. The Strayer University campuses are owned by Strayer Education, Inc. (NASDAQ: STRA), headquartered in Herndon, Virginia.
Strayer University specializes in higher education for working adults seeking career advancement.[1] Currently, there are approximately 60,000 students enrolled at Strayer University. S. Irving Strayer founded a small Maryland college in 1892, Strayer's Business College. In 1969, the school was renamed Strayer College when it received licensure to grant the Bachelor of Science degree. Authorization to grant the Master of Science degree followed in 1987. In 1996, Strayer Education, Inc., was established to take Strayer College public and raise capital for expansion. This expansion included the ability to offer online classes to students around the world. In 1998, Strayer College was granted university status by the District of Columbia Education Licensure Commission and became Strayer University.
On May 29, 2008, Strayer University installed Sondra Stallard as the university’s 13th president. Stallard joined Strayer University after serving as dean of the School of Continuing and Professional Studies at the University of Virginia.[4] In 2010 Strayer Education CEO Robert S. Silberman became the highest paid CEO in the Washington DC area with a total compensation of $41.9 million dollars. [5]
Strayer University has approximately 90 campuses, to include locations in Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, D.C., West Virginia, and Wisconsin.[6]
Strayer University's academic disciplines include degree and certificate programs in accounting, business, criminal justice, economics, information systems, management, public administration, health services administration, and education.
Jack Welch's educational program on leadership has been acquired by Strayer for $7 mln [7].
